Activity: Symbolism in The Catcher in the Rye

30 Points Available

Objectives: Understanding symbolism

Inferring the possible thematic significance of symbols

Reminder: Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities.

Activity:

  • Re-read the paragraphs in Chapter 5 where Holden is describing Allie’s baseball mitt. What is the symbolism of Allie’s glove? Why might Holden choose to write an entire essay detailing this glove?

  • When you are done rereading, write a paragraph about the symbolism of Allie’s glove.

  • Think about a symbol in your life that holds great meaning. It could be a childhood toy, a piece of clothing, a place, or even a pet. Write a paragraph (minimum 6 sentences) about this symbolic piece of your life in detail and describe what it means to you and the effect it has had on your life.

Note: You may choose to handwrite or type this piece. PLEASE be sure to write neatly. If I can’t read what you’ve written, you will lose points.

DUE: End of class TODAY (11/17)
