Inclusions (Book #1)

By: Emily Duvall

Summary from Goodreads:

When Melanie Cahill turned her back on Luke Harrison seven years ago, she cut ties with him completely. Not once has she checked on what happened to him. Nor does she care. Then her incarcerated brother asks her for an unthinkable favor that puts Melanie directly back in Luke’s path. She needs uncomplicated. She needs easy. Luke has never been either.

Luke hasn’t forgotten about Melanie. He built himself a flawless reputation in the business of selling gemstones. There’s room for few imperfections in his life, including Melanie. He sees through her the second she walks through his door. She wants something from him. If only the attraction didn’t get in the way. If only he could put aside his selfish agenda. Luke puts her in an impossible situation…one that promises their past won’t stay buried.

About the Author:

My love of reading stories began as a young girl. I read my first romance novel decades ago, and I was hooked. Seriously. I still am. And although I have not always been a writer, I’ve always been a reader. I encourage writers everywhere to keep their love of reading during the “process” of writing.

No matter what genre I read, I always come back to romance stories as my absolute favorite. There’s nothing like that one book that stays on your mind long after you’ve read the ending. But that’s the entire point of writing in this genre I suppose, to create characters that stay on your mind and your heart, to bring on the falling in part of love and all that comes with it: wrong choices, complications, miscommunication, and loads of heartbreak.

Advice to you if you’re starting out on your writing journey? Write each day, even if it’s only a sentence. So much of writing is just doing it. Just write. Just give those characters in your mind a story to tell. I worked in educational research for the National Assessment of Educational Progress where I developed training materials for national studies for years before I began writing. Then I had my children. There was no time for much of anything. However, between the two, I started writing early in the morning (since I was up anyway) and fed my creative outlet. Motherhood, careers, college, and whatever life throws at you can coexist if you want to pursue writing. – Emily

REVIEW:

Before we begin: This book is the second in the Flawless series. I received CUT in exchange for an honest review. I HAVE NOT read INCLUSIONS, the first book in the series, but this book was able to be read as a stand alone (which is really awesome), so it did not affect my ability to understand the story. Review: I read this book in one sitting. It was easy to read and although this is not my genre of choice, I found myself unable to put it down. The book itself takes place in a relatively short period of time, covering the space of only a few days, but in those few days the action is pretty much nonstop. Jessica, an unhappy bride-to-be is enjoying herself at her stereotypical bachelorette party, becoming uncharacteristically drunk and ready for anything, when she runs into Brent Harrison and makes a mistake. As her night begins to spiral out of control, Duvall begins to suck her readers in. I wasn’t particularly interested in the romance aspect of this story, though I think it will be a selling point for most readers. The relationship between Jessica and her husband-to-be, “doctor Carl” is awkward and strained and obviously not working out, so it comes as no surprise to readers when she accidentally stumbles on something new. Brent is dark and mysterious. He deals in the family business of danger and diamonds and is supposed to be our protagonist’s knight in shining armor. He’s also got a sad backstory that is supposed to make him more relatable and stir up empathy in readers. To be honest, I didn’t care for Brent or Carl. They were my main issues with the story and the reason I’m giving it four stars instead of five. Carl was a whiny, pretentious underdeveloped asshole, and Brent was equally ostentatious and douchey. I wanted Jessica to stand on her own two feet and figure things out for herself. There was potential for her to get herself out of a soul-sucking almost-marriage and out into the world as her own woman for awhile, but she jumped back into love so quickly that it gave me a little bit of whiplash ~ as I said, romance is not usually my genre of choice. The suspense, on the other hand, was something else entirely. Early on, Jessica is given word that her estranged sister has been beaten and is fighting for her life in the hospital ICU and Jessica is given a mystery to solve that involves stolen diamonds. This book has everything you’d expect in a suspense: romance, family drama, kidnapping, stolen diamonds. I really enjoyed the mystery and all of the twists and turns that made up this novel. The cover is pretty, too. All in all, I would recommend this to anyone who is an avid fan of romantic suspense. It’s definitely a page turner!
